Remote Access

I want to set up remote access to my manager io accounting, but I am a novice when it comes to computer IT.

Can some one please guide me step-by-step with the command codes and how to setup the router forwarding process…?

use the Cloud version?

Setting up remote access without knowing what you are doing could very well lead to a huge security problem

You can also change your application data folder to somewhere that is remotely accessible. See Move desktop application data to another folder | Manager.

The risk there is that you would want to be extremely careful not to open it from two computers at once.

I would hire a qualified IT technician not only to setup up the remote access, but ensure that it could be setup as securely as possible. With ransomware, malware, hacking breaches etc, you really don’t want to open up your internal network by doing things on the cheap. If you lost all your accounting data because of a breach, it will cost you a lot more than the money you save trying to do the work yourself.

I recommend subscribing to the cloud.

I strongly recommend you do not follow that path. In the long term it is likely to cost you far more than you anticipated.

If you use Manager desktop and have a cloud storage facility already, then using them together as Tut referenced above is a sensible solution.

If you just need to access your home network when away, setting up vpn access for yourself is probably the safest way as secure tools for vpn are available.

If you really want to allow public internet access to your accounting server, I strongly recommend you employ an IT professional. Talk to then about

  • A firewall
  • Access log
  • Port forwarding
  • Server data backup plan
  • Server code update plan

While waiting for this try the NG Software cloud product. I believe you will find it cheaper overall.

I agree with Tut, and have implemented a solution using DropBox. I use the desktop version and I can access my business data from home or remotely. The only caveat is that the desktop version is single user and therefore DO NOT try accessing the business data from different locations simultaneously. DropBox synchronization works extremely well and, as such, your data is kept accurate. As the “footprint” of the Manager database is quite small you may well be able to use the free version of DropBox to host. I have 2500 inventory items ; 500 customers ; 60 suppliers ; around 80 significant transactions (Purchase Orders ; Goods Received ; Sales Quotes ; Sales Orders etc.) per day, and have no storage issues. I am looking into using MS Onedrive as the free version has even more storage capacity.
If you establish some simple housekeeping procedures such as regular backup / restore, version control for all devices, random data validation checks, then all will be well.
Enjoy.
