Are there any plans to offer a desktop edition that can run in Chrome? I use a PC, but recent news has revealed how many of us are running machines that can’t upgrade to Windows 11 (many don’t want to anyway). A recent estimate put it at 3/4 of 1.4 billion computers currently run Windows 10.
I, like many others, do not want (or have the funds) to spend $1,000+ for a new computer. Thus, Chrome OS Flex is an attractive alternative. This presents a problem if I want to continue with Manager.
Unfortunately, while the initial investment might be cheaper, the cost to own will be higher since Chrome OS is a cloud based platform – this is the whole idea behind Chrome OS and this is what Google advertise.
This also means that you will have to pay more on subscriptions since nobody wants to work hard on building and maintaining desktop software for an OS based mainly on cloud services.
There is a work around for running Manager on a Chromebook. I run manager on a Chromebook and also use Dropbox as the automatic backup/update file process.
Chromebooks are basically a version of Linux and you need to activate the Linux side.
I got involved in discussions about setting up Manager on a Chromebook and if you look in my profile and my posts you will find the link to the discussion. You run the .appimage file
Thanks! But seeing as how I am a PC user, I don’t understand “…you need to activate the Linux side.” I’ll be reading the instructions you provided. I know some features aren’t available in Chrome OS Flex. Do you know if Flex will handle your procedure?
So the only options are to buy a new PC running Windows 11 (which I hear is pretty terrible), pay to use the cloud version of Manager (?accessible from a Chrome device?) or move on from Manager. Does that sum it up in your opinion?
I’m not saying that that’s the only option but I don’t think that this forum is the right place to get general IT advise. Maybe some outside research will help you get better information.
If your ‘old pc’ is in reasonable condition, etc I’d download and install Mint Linux on it and, among other things, continue to use Manager. I’ve been using Mint Linux since day one and it is perfect for my needs.
Just searched YouTube to see if Chrome OS Flex runs appimage files and it does. To me the guy may as well have been running a Chromebook for I could not see a difference. The advantage of Chromebooks is they are fast, cheap and secure all out of the box with an amazing battery life. They are used in many schools
My preference is a Chromebook with a High Definition screen and if going the Windows route do not go for the Windows 11 S operating system for I believe that will not load Window programs but only run Windows Apps.
YouTube is a great source for how to complete tasks you may require to know for we are getting off topic teally
I realize it’s a bit off-topic since this forum is for Manager issues, but it’s related since hardware requirements are very much a consideration for installing Manager. That being said, since you have the experience and it saves me an online search, how much adaptation will I need to go from Windows PC to Linux? I thought I had heard that a lot of programs won’t run on Linux. Thus, I’d be “stealing from Peter to pay Paul” by making the switch. I’m considering my easiest solution might be to take my NUC offline and use it as my dedicated Manager computer and just flash Chrome OS Flex onto my laptop for all other activities. Ugh! Thank you, Windows for all this complication!
You can down load Mint Linux to a bootable USB stick and try it without actually installing to confirm that you are happy with the solution. Then if happy install to ‘take over your entire hard drive’ … make sure that you have a back up of any of your personal and business files first.
