Due to problems with OPTUS I recently had to change my email host and web host etc and of course this also meant that our email settings (within Manager) also have to be changed.
It appears as though a common problem with this scenario is that the Mail Host specifies a single port number (in my case 465) for their SMTP server and the ports specified by Manager are either 25 or 587.
I have noticed a few other forum posts with a similar problem but so far, I haven’t been able to find any solutions so I would appreciate any advice on what I may be able to do.
As indicated in the other posts, normally all providers also use port 587 as this is the standard port and port 465 is outdated. Have you tried that one?
Please provide more information. Who is your new email hosting provider?
Thanks for the quick reply Mark.
By what I can see in the host’s C Panel, unlike Manager, there are no options to select
Sure mate, I’m using Dream IT host (my.dreamithost.com.au)
You haven’t answered my question about trying port 587.
And it’s not allowed to upload PDF files. Use a screenshot application such as Windows’ Snipping Tool or Snip & Sketch.
Sorry Mark, Yes I have tried both options on the Manager side but on the host’s side there doesn’t seem to be any way of using a different port.
looking at https://help.dreamithost.com.au/knowledgebase-legacy/article/server-settings-imappopsmtp
It appears they support port 587 but not with SSL/TLS
Thanks Patch,
If I was to go down that track (non SSL/TLS) do you have any idea how common or what sort of security
issues may occur ?
When did you change-over? Does your normal email work, i.e. are you able to send and receive emails on same domain name. usually it takes 24-48 hours for DNS records to propagate. When you are able to send and receive an email to yourself on this domain name then your MSX records are set properly as well.
Even though often not advertised but as mentioned by others here port 587 even when not listed is mostly supported without being able to set it yourself in your CPANEL of the hosting account. It could simply mean you have to wait a day (if transferred today) and it will work.
In terms of security, both port 465 and 587 are considered secure because they run over TLS encryption , meaning that no third party could intercept any data sent back and forth.
