Https encrypts the communication between your manager server and your web browser.

If your server is on the same computer or local area network, then doing so adds no security benefit (other than suppressing the browser warning based on it assuming you are accessing an internet site).

That is effectively what the desktop version does. The two software program approach is apparently how the desktop solution worked in the past.
