I have my data files stored on dropbox and normally sync with them on ubuntu via the native dropbox sync tool. This works fine. However, I have recently bought a chromebook and have struggled to get the dropbox tool to work from within the crostini container. So my solution was to use rclone to carry out sync functions. However, on first using, when I tried to access my data, manager opens to an entirely empty chart of accounts. The file is still as big as it was, so the data must still be there, I am just assuming the sql is corrupted somehow. What can I do to recover the data? Thx
You need to provide further information:
- When you say your data files are stored on Dropbox, exactly what do you mean? Have you changed your application data folder location to Dropbox, or are you just backup up your Manager files to that remote location?
- What edition of the program are you using, desktop, server, or cloud?
- What do you mean by an entirely empty chart of accounts? Do you mean you see the default chart of accounts as if you have added a new business, with zero balances? Or do you mean you see your chart of accounts, but with zero balances? Or do you mean something else?
- What file are you referring to as being as big as it was? And how are you determining its size?
- What do you mean by accessing your data? Are you launching Manager and attempting to select a business on the Businesses page? Are you trying to examine date in a file in the application data folder? Or something else?
Thanks for the response;
Dropbox - my data files have always been stored on dropbox and in ubuntu I have changed folder location to the dropbox sync directory. In chromebook, this not possible, so I therefore created a directory called dropbox and used rclone to mount the remote dropbox folder to that location.
Edition - desktop 21.5.51
Empty COA - I see the business but when I click the business there is nothing, no tabs (other than summary, journal entries, reports and settings), and no entries. So even less than a default screen (as a new business would at least be populated with other default tabs).
File size - the .manager file is approx the same size as it was before, about 1.2Mb
Accessing data - so, yes, when going into manager, I see the business, but on selecting the business I have as above. Since, sending the original message I have also acessed the data via an online sql viewer and I can see content that I recognise as entries.
I have just created a test business to confirm what I said above. Actually, no, the tabs on the ‘corrupted’ data are the same - but that business shows neither and income nor an expenses panel in the summary. All fields are blank.
Sorry, but you are not being clear. The tabs are the same as what? And what do you mean by “neither and income nor an expenses panel?” A default new business you add has both income and expense placeholder accounts. Screen shots would help illustrate what you are seeing.
Let’s start with a screen shot of the Businesses page. Be sure to include the black application data folder path at the bottom left. Is the business in question shown? If so, and you can open it, show a screen shot of the Summary page, then one of your Customize options.
Thx - will do
Start by enabling all the tabs in Permawise that you think you have used.
- Backup your business(es) on your old computer
- Import your business(es) on your new computer
When you have basic functionality working, then consider getting an automated syncing process working.
Done that, all enabled tabs showing zero entries
Wise thinking - horse is now bolted however. My problem is that I was directly using backed-up data to start over. Should’ve backed up the backup, but didn’t.
Sounds like your sync program synced in the opposite direction to what you wanted.
Hope you have another backup somewhere safe.
it seems to be stranger than that. the data is still there, but methinks the sql tables have been over-written or something.
Done that - tabs displaying, but with zero content.
I now feel very silly. I have been so preoccupied by the whole issue of rclone messing with the data that I never stopped to remind myself that dropbox stores versions of all data. So although I am no further forward to resolving how or why the data got corrupted, it was an easy act to get dropbox to revert to an earlier version of the .manager file. Therefore, data now restored ![]()
