Since Dynamic rolling calculations were put into Obsolete features, users have been facing a challege to manage the accounts since the recalculation isn’t triggered by anything and it’s left to the user to remember it.
One way to solve this is to use external checklists to ensure thoroughness but that has never been the case with Manager since it’s beginning.
I’m not arguing against periodic valuation since it’s definitely one way of getting things done, and in fact, I have since noticed a big improvement in database performance which is always welcome.
However, we can still treat some of the problem that came as side effects, for example, giving the users a scheduler facility that automatically runs reports and/or valuations at user-defined intervals, or even provide notifications and links to run these tasks on a timely basis – similar to Recurring transactions.
I’m not suggesting that this is the only way to go and I am interested to see what @lubos and other users think of this.
As you aware all automation would require a trigger, i.e. cron job (Linux/MAC), and task scheduler (Windows). This will make the distribution far more tedious and error prone.
I’m sorry I didn’t word this clearly, I should have said: “Provide notifications and links for users to run these tasks manually on a timely basis – similar to Recurring transactions.”
Yes that would work, but what would this accomplish? These are in Obsolete features because they compared to some other ones have good alternatives that require these to be no longer functioning to avoid issues. They are probably there because not everyone may have migrated to use the new alternatives. Maybe a permanent Alert line to change to the new alternatives in the Investment and Foreign Currencies when still using these should help.
