When I had this problem last week, when I needed a copy to email to my accountant, I managed to copy a backup from the App Data folder. I don’t even see the file there at the moment, only the Backup Test file I created.
No you should not do that. You can change the file Name here also but leave the file type (after the last period)
Put your new backup in a different empty directory so you can see what is happening. If you do that there will not be a previous file with the same name
So I created another TEST business and backed up. Successful. Backed it up to a different folder. Still successful. Backed it up and renamed it by adding “2” to the file name and the backup file is invalid. So my diagnosis is something wrong when I rename the file.
So on business accounts I hit backup and did not change any file name at all and it has worked.
(I renamed my actual accounts to simplify the name WITHIN the program which is why 1.7.16 is missing.)
So then I select back up and changed the file name in Manager backup window BEFORE hitting the blue backup button and THAT appears to have worked.
Then I select back up, hit blue backup button then change the file name at computer file directory window before hitting Save, that has NOT worked.
I’m hoping this is the solution and any file name change must be done at the Manager window before hitting the blue backup button, NOT at the computer file directory level. I’ve just never had this problem before.
Any suggestions as to why welcome but I think I’ve got to the bottom of it…
Why would you want to change the filename using the O/S file manager?
Manager has a facility to change the Business and filename if you need to do this
It names the backups in a way that enables you to differentiate between different versions of the backup - the naming system proposed by Manager should be adequate for most users unless you are doing multiple backups in the same day.
It feels like you have complicated your file/business management unduly and this has led to the various problems you have experienced.
If I backup to use the file on another PC, then back that up again to use on my original PC, without renaming, the file name string would become longer and longer with more and more dates added on the end. I never had a problem previously and I’m sure I didn’t always use the rename option at the Manager Backup window but sometimes renamed the file in my documents window before hitting save. Either way, something changed with either my PC or the Manager program such that only the first option works. I now know this, so going forward I expect no more of these issues.
