Is it possible to have somewhere to get software to check for updates when connected to the internet, or even a button to manually check and update?
There are new versions every day. You really don’t need to be on the very latest version as each upgrade brings marginal improvements. It only adds up to something more substantial after a month or so.
You can keep an eye on Releases | Manager and upgrade when you see some improvement that you can actually benefit from.
You can manually check by clicking on the Edition button at the top of the forum page
and the latest version number is displayed under the download type
I understand that but it would be so much simpler to do this from the program itself
That really would be of questionable benefit. You need to close the program anyway to update.
I was thinking a version check in the about manager tab, every (user defined) days - 7 days by default, with the latest available version number being shown along with user’s version, and a link to the download page.
I like that, it would be of benefit.
I think that it would be great to see in the ‘About Manager’ tab that there is a more recent version. I’d use it occasionally instead of the website.
However, I also agree that it has very little practical benefit due to the ease with which we can check the version on the website, and the high frequency of updates means that almost on a daily basis that tab would indicate at least a patch-level update as these seem to be released multiple times a day.
i recommend that there be a new application level preference where the user can define that
the frequency of checking
- Once per day
- once a week (selected by default)
- once every 14 days
- once every 30 days
This “frequency checking” has one flaw - it assumes that the user is / can be online when they are using Manager. Also, Manager can be used on computers with no direct internet access.
