Restore from a backup

I need to change computers and have prepared a backup copy using version Manager 16.8.7. However when I try to restore using Add Business/Import Business feature on the new computer which is running Manager 18.1.0 I am getting INVALID FILE FORMAT error. How do I correct this error? Is 5here an update I can run on the old computer before I back up the files and move?

Thanks I a dvance for any assistance.

Yes, the same 18.1.0 you downloaded onto the new computer.

@Gizzie, there are some really old versions of Manager data files that cannot be converted to the latest file structure by new updates. But I’m fairly certain 16.8.7 isn’t old enough for that to be a problem. I suspect you’ve done something improper with your backup and restore procedure. Make sure you’ve read this Guide before you try again: Manager Cloud.

Thanks for the info. I am doing the backup as instructed but the file that is created is not a zip file as shown in the guide. It has the same icon as when I create a tsv file for exporting reports. How can I upgrade to latest version on my old laptop. I was unable to find a feature to check for updates or to run updates.

You update in exactly the same way you originally installed. Don’t uninstall anything first. Manager takes care of that.

Also, forget about the zip file icons. I don’t think the backups are zipped any more.

Also, what operating system are you using?

On the old laptop log into the forum page and click on Desktop

Or on the new computer, do the same download but do a “Save As” on to a USB stick.
Put the USB into the old laptop and double click the file.

Windows 7 home premium service pack 1

it would be better to install the latest version 18.1.0 on your old computer first without uninstalling the older version 16.8.7. just overwrite.
now run the newly installed version and make a backup of your business.
use this new backup to import on the new computer.
