Importing Bank Statements with Reverse Values

It is still an issue with some banks and financial institutions that the exported bank statement file has the values the wrong way round. This seems especially the case with credit card statements Is it possible to add a “Reverse values when importing bank statement” checkbox to the bank account edit screen? If checked then just multiply all values by -1 when importing.

While the task of reversing the signs on a bank statement is somewhat trivial on a spreadsheet, I still don’t believe that spreadsheet skills should be a requirement for importing bank statements in Manager and that’s if you’re using .csv which is the least reliable format.

If you use any other format, manual manipulation would be impossible for most users.

For those reasons, I am placing this in ideas.

I also support this. Especially because Manager some time ago (in my view rightly) separated Payments and Receipts tabs. As our banks provide debit and credit in separate columns in their CSV files (only format they provide!) we every time haven to modify the spreadsheet using simple formulas and deleting the redundant columns. We manage but it would save a lot of time if debit and credit columns could not be merged into one amount import.

More (redundant) import fields may provide a variety of users with the required flexibility. Users could then just ensure their import has the correct headings according to the column imported.

CSV importing is a lot more flexible now. In most cases, it’s no longer necessary to modify CSV file manually. Manager can recognize a lot of columns now. If your CSV file does not import, send it to me to lubos@manager.io and I’ll have a look what can be done.

So does it now allow for separate credit and debit columns? So rather than having single Amount column we have 2 columns?

Yes. Manager will recognize Debit and Credit columns too.

Great, maybe time to update the guide at Import bank statements | Manager

Good point. But there is no longer list of supported columns for CSV. Manager understands many columns that are used by banks and more columns are added as people send their bank statement samples in.

But the issue here @lubos is a credit card statement with a single amount column where (+) is a payment and (-) is a deposit.

How would the user deal with this?

That’s impressive, well done.

I have not checked recently however in the past European users have had difficulty with number format such as having a comma as a decimal point separator. It would be nice for such users if Manager used a number format consistent with each location. Such as the number format the user has set for the business.

But maybe this has already been implemented this post is obsolete.
