Right now, the discount column on invoices and receipts only reduces the line item price. This is fine for presentation, but it doesn’t connect to any account, so we can’t see the total discounts given to customers over time.
It would be very useful if the discount column could be linked to a defined account (like “Sales Discounts”). That way, every discount entry would automatically post there, and we could track totals in reports without needing to add separate line items.
This would keep invoices clean while giving businesses proper management insight into how much margin is being sacrificed. For example, in trading businesses, knowing the total annual discounts is critical for profitability analysis.

Hello @Naqib_Khan,
Welcome to the forum.
Discount is automatically classified as a reduction in sales amount and it goes to the same sales account of the item in question.
You could argue that another accounting is treatment is better, and you wouldn’t be wrong but not a single treatment would be the end-all-be-all solution.
Either way, I think this is just a side discussion.
Please correct me if I was wrong, but I think your main goal is to assess profitability by Customer, right?
Hi , Ealfardan
Thank you for the welcome and for clarifying how discounts are currently treated in Manager.io. You are correct that the discount column reduces the sales amount and flows into the same account as the item.
My main goal, however, is not only to assess profitability by customer, but also to gain visibility into the total discounts given over a period. In many trading and retail businesses, discounts are a significant part of pricing strategy and directly affect margins. If they remain hidden inside net sales, it becomes difficult to analyze how much revenue was sacrificed.
That’s why I suggested a customizable option to link the discount column to a defined account (like “Sales Discounts”). This would keep invoices clean for customers, while giving management the ability to track discounts separately in reports. I agree there isn’t a single universal treatment, but having the option would let each business choose the approach that fits their reporting needs.
So yes, customer profitability is one part of my goal, but discount visibility and reporting is equally important for management decision
