We made all the necessary changes with SMTP authentication in Manager 10 days ago and our emails were working fine. Overnight something has changed and they are not working and we receive this error message ’ 535: 5.7.139 Authentication unsuccessful, basic authentication is disabled. [BN9PR03CA0744.namprd03.prod.outlook.com 2024-09-23T23:07:11.348Z 08DCD837F19AC35B]’ We can’t seem to resolve this issue. We use a hotmail email address.
Is anyone else having issues and is there anyone that can assist PLEASE? This is so incredibly frustrating.
When you use SMTP protocol, Manager just shows you what SMTP server replies.
If you are not able to resolve the issue with SMTP, you can now use HTTP protocol and free email service email.manager.io
Thank you @lubos so very very much … we are using HTTP protocol as suggested and all is working perfectly again. We truly appreciate your assistance!
@Lubos please note that the error is created by Manager in the sense that you can no longer save a new password in SMTP settings. I tried with different browsers emptying the cache and it just does not save the new password.
I really think that we should not be forced to use HTTP as mail protocol. We prefer SMTP over HTTP because:
- It is specifically built for sending emails, making it more efficient than HTTP, which is more general-purpose and focused on web content delivery (indeed you can argue this is what Manager does but SMTP does more).
- SMTP retries sending emails if the recipient’s server is down, ensuring messages are eventually delivered. HTTP lacks this feature.
- SMTP is used by all email systems, making it widely compatible.
- It supports encryption (SSL/TLS) and authentication, ensuring secure email transmission.
- It ensures that emails can be sent between different email systems (e.g., Gmail to Outlook).
@Lubos the inability to save a new SMTP password is found on Manager v24.9.19.1857 Server edition (Ubuntu 20.04 TLS). I did not try a desktop edition.
Hi. I am using the latest Manager desktop version 24.9.19.1857.
Today I received the same outlook.com error when trying to send out invoices by email.
After some digging it transpires that outlook.com on September 16 deprecated basic authentication and now only allows “modern authentication”.
The desktop version of Manager appears to support only SMTP.
Is there another fix?
Thanks
SMTP works with outlook so please provide an edit screen of your SMTP settings.

My bad On going to the Email Settings screen to get the screenshot I realised that the Protocol setting is a combobox droplist for SMTP or HTTP. I used the HTTP settings as above and works fine Sorry for the inconvenience.
With Outlook.com you now need to setup two factor authentication, once done you can then create an app password that you use within Manager to smtp via Outlook.com.
It all works fine once you complete the above steps.
