I have had many HMRC VAT checks and never had any criticism of how sales invoices are produced. This screen shot shows when there is no need for individual line VAT because every item is the same VAT percentage and the total appears at the bottom.

I have produced VAT invoices in this way ever since VAT became applicable and HMRC have found them acceptable.
