I know that it has been mentioned before that inventory module is coming. Any idea as to when this function will become available?

This is basically imminent and should be available within 2 weeks.

I am currently running version 14.1.8 and I do not see an update tab; will this new feature (inventory) get updated automatically or will I need to do something manually? I am running Ubuntu 12.04.
You will get automatically upgraded by Ubuntu Software Center but if you want inventory module as soon as it’s released, you are better off downloading the latest .deb package for Ubuntu directly from our website (Ubuntu Software Center is always behind 1-5 weeks in terms of latest versions)
