Automatically merge duplicate contacts

Our staff almost always create a new customer before creating a sales invoice instead of checking if that customer already has a file or records, ending up with a lot of duplicate customers. Is there an automatic and fast way to merge identical customer contacts together? I know it can be done manually but it is time consuming.
