Uh?
This is a great summary! Thanks for writing.
I still want all the above features, and this post lays out the guidelines to getting us there. I have migrated to manager cloud because i needed multi user access but manager works the same in a browser as on the desktop version, including the shortcomings.
What would need to happen to get us there?
Only the developer can implement the changes required to make Manager more accessible. The html and css coding that I provided is meant to show Lubos how little work actually needs to be done to make manager accessible. Unfortunately there is nothing that we as the end users can do.
As I spent a lot of time researching accessibility for my website, I thought that I would pass on my findings as I was pleasantly surprised to find that the amount of coding required to make my website accessible was barely 15 lines of code!
I really would like to see these improvements in Manager because quite frankly the colour contrasts for even people with standard vision is not very good. Especially active tabs on the navigation menu, the contrast is too low to easily see which tab is active and the default focus state isn’t particularly good contrast either!
But I have to be honest and say that I provided the information to the developer because the information was fresh in my mind, not because I expected anything to be done. My experience of Manager updates - especially in the last few years - I have no confidence that this or many of the other ideas languishing in the ideas category will be developed any time soon. The developer seems to spend an inordinate amount tweaking current features to the nth degree, whilst useful new features like this one and further and necessary improvements to the Customer Portal just sit and gather dust. To further add to the frustration I have more than once had to use batch update after updating Manager to reverse new changes that downgraded my functionality of the program. Lately, Manager updates are removing functionality rather than adding it.
I just say this because I don’t want to get your hopes up that anything will be done. Your idea has been in the ideas category for nearly six years now so I am not holding my breath for any change! I just posted the information while it was fresh in my mind.
I normally renew Manager every year, but I have decided next year that I won’t be renewing again until the Customer Portal has been developed for production use as none of the other updates I have received in the last couple of years has offered me anything that I actually value. I will only renew again if and when the Customer Portal is fit for real world use and Manager supports MFA - which is now virtually standard on any other website and is absolutely essential in the fight against cyber crime.
Implementing semantic HTML, keyboard shortcuts, and improved color contrasts could indeed make a significant difference for users relying on screen readers. I’m particularly interested in the idea of 'Skip Keyboard Navigation’ and ‘Focus States’ to facilitate easier navigation. It seems like these improvements could not only benefit screen reader users but also enhance the overall user experience. I’m looking forward to seeing how these ideas evolve and contribute to making Manager even more accessible to everyone.
