Is there anywhere I can see the custom fields position number? is this something that can be added to a column in the list of fields view?

That would be the order they appear on the Edit form.
If you want to rearrange columns in a tab view, you can use Edit Columns appearing below the table. There you can rearrange columns by dragging them around.
