And if so is it easy or automatic?

No, there is no information on when a new release is published
The upgrade process is simple - simply download the new version and install it.
Your existing business data is preserved
However, it would be prudent to ensure that you have a backup copy of your business file, just in case
especially as updates may change/update the data file so is incompatible with earlier versions. Personally, I keep backups of both the software and relevant data file.
