Multiple business divisions' profitability

Hello

We have multiple business divisions / cost & revenue generation units.
Using MANAGER, what is the most practical, convenient yet comprehensive way of knowing the profitability each unit is generating?

  1. Should we use a customized field to be used as a tag (to mention division initials / code ; OR
  2. Make 1st digit of account code representing the division; OR
  3. You suggest if you know other way
