A party of ours is both a customer and a supplier at the same time. And we have maintained both accounts Debtor and Creditor. My question is , is there any option that we can have their combined balance either through report or something else.
Sorry in advance if question is already discussed somewhere, i searched but coudnt find
This is an excellent suggestion. If a joint account is not feasible, we could instead create a Joint Statement Report. Such a report, whether native or extension-based, would allow the selection of customer and supplier accounts and display a ledger view with a running balance by transaction date, providing a consolidated closing balance overview.
Please note that this report should it be considered for implementation would only present a consolidated view; it would not alter account balances in the general ledger. I believe customer and supplier accounts should remain distinct, even when they belong to the same economic entity. Balances would need to be offset manually through journal entries.
I have come across problems with this in other software. Because we got a refund from a supplier, the refund made the supplier a customer also. It also put something to do with this into the customer statement list, and when clicking on the entry, it opened up as zero, but in the list it had a value. Weird.
I ended up adding AR or AP at the end of accounts where we had them as both supplier and customer, just so they never got confused.
So I agree with the comments that they should be kept distinct.
I guess it would be just a report and nothing to do with actual accounting. We are a gruoup of companies and using an ERP as well. In that ERP we have this combined ledger report option.
So in reports an option of comined view may be added and will have no harm to any account
