Autofill Project

I would like to request an enhancement that allows Projects to be assigned to General Ledger accounts, inventory items, and non-inventory items. When a user selects an account or item during transaction entry, the system should automatically populate the associated project on the transaction line.

This functionality is particularly valuable for non-profit and project-based organizations, where many General Ledger accounts are created specifically to track project-related income, expenses, and profitability. Automatically assigning the project would improve data entry efficiency, reduce manual effort, and minimize errors and inconsistent project coding by ensuring transactions are allocated to the appropriate project by default.

The feature should also be designed with future project-based security in mind. If project access is later controlled through user permissions, the system should validate the automatically assigned project against the user’s access rights. If the user is not authorized to use the default project, the system should notify them and require them to select an alternative project from those they are permitted to access before the transaction can be saved.

Designing the feature this way will deliver immediate benefits through faster and more accurate transaction entry while ensuring compatibility with future project-level security enhancements without requiring significant redesign.
