Is it possible to have the item codes as links to the inventory from the sales/purchase order and sales/purchase quotes, so that a particular inventory item can be viewed whenever required.

Simple answer, No.
A slightly longer answer as to why this cannot be readily done is that inventory item records are indexed by UUIDs, not item codes. In other words, the item code is an attribute of the inventory item, not an identifier. You can actually have multiple inventory items with the same item codes.
