Can't find info regarding Privacy Policy of Self-hosted version

Hi,

I am testing the software and I’m liking it so far. But as a self-hosted software, I find it a little alarming that there is no privacy policy or details with regards to how things work in the Server edition. Especially since this is not an Open source project.

I was only able to find the privacy policy of the forum website. But nothing about the server edition binary itself.

There is no privacy policy for the server edition, because you will own the license, install and maintain the software on your own equipment. There will be no contact or interaction with NGSoftware.

It would be better if such thing was mentioned somewhere on the website. This is basically freeware and it should come with a solid policy.

No, it definitely is not freeware. The desktop edition is offered for free. But the server edition requires a paid license. And you are then totally responsible for installation and security. How could the developer possibly promulgate a privacy policy for software that you host?

The server edition can be installed without a license right?

And I’m used to self-hosted software being open sourced. In the case of Manager, it’s not which leaves questions as to what the binary is actually doing.

Manager server does not need an internet connection to work locally. I don’t believe it calls home but may when the license is first installed.
You can block such access locally to be sure.

I agree it would be nice to have it in the privacy policy however as the main version is the NG Software cloud hosted version and the current policy supports an advertisement sponsored model, I doubt that will happen.

You are wrong! See information at Manager.io [emphasis added]

Free trial on server edition has no time limit. You will see notice at the top informing you of running free trial. When you are satisfied with the software, please purchase product key to register the copy and remove the notice.

Once the trial is over and you use it in production you are asked to pay for the product key.

Not all self hosted software is open source, some are but many are not.

Server edition (and the same applies to desktop edition) doesn’t call home or anywhere. Such a thing would be easily detectable.

Privacy policy makes sense when company is collecting data so you’d have privacy policy explaining what kind of data are being collected and how they are being used.

Since we do not collect any data, there is no need for privacy policy. What could it possibly contain? Even our website has no trackers, cookies etc. We don’t collect any data when you use our website, desktop edition or server edition.

I think you have a really great thing going on here. And mentioning something like what you just mentioned on your website would go a long way in my opinion. Something worth thinking about. Nonetheless, thank you for the great work, this is one of the best software I’ve come across in my search for a full solution.

Sorry @Lubos but you collect data from users, be it registered forum users (email address) but more importanly license paying users. It really can not harm to add such policy both ways.
